From 19 to 21 June 1963, a papal conclave was held to elect a successor to John XXIII, who had died on 3 June 1963. The cardinal electors gathered in Rome and elected Cardinal Giovanni Battista Montini, Archbishop of Milan, in six ballots. He accepted the election and chose the name Paul VI.
