Historical background
In July 1945, the Berlin Sports Palace was in a state of destruction and devastation. During the Second World War, Berlin, like many other major European cities, was subjected to heavy bombing, especially towards the end of the war. The Sportpalast, a prominent sports and event venue in Berlin, was severely damaged by the Allied bombing raids.
The Sportpalast was not only a sports centre, but also served as a venue for political meetings and events during the Nazi era. The Sportpalast is famous as the place where Joseph Goebbels held his incendiary speech on 18 February 1943, in which he called on the Germans to wage total war against the Allies. By July 1945, however, the Nazi regime had capitulated and Berlin was occupied by the Allies.
After the war, much of Berlin lay in ruins, including its infrastructure, buildings and landmarks. The Sportpalast was no exception.
