Historical context

John F. Kennedy was sworn in as the 35th President of the United States on 20 January 1961. The swearing-in ceremony took place on the steps of the Capitol in Washington, D.C.. It was a cold and snowy day, but despite the inclement weather, a large crowd gathered to witness the historic event. He is the youngest man and the first Catholic ever to be elected to this office. The film scenes show the highlights of the ceremonies and celebrations in the capital to mark the inauguration of John F. Kennedy, beginning with his reception by Mr Eisenhower at the White House. Despite a snowstorm, hundreds of thousands gather outside the capital as Vice President Lyndon Johnson and Mr Kennedy are inaugurated.

John F. Kennedy then delivers his short but moving inaugural address under the proud gaze of Mrs Kennedy. The inaugural address is one of the most famous speeches in American history. In it, he urged Americans: “Ask not what your country can do for you – ask what you can do for your country”. This call to public service resonated with the American people and set the tone for his presidency.

After lunch, the official group heads to the White House to review the exciting three and a half hour inaugural parade. That evening, President Kennedy attends five gala balls, capping off a glittering two-and-a-half day event that marks the beginning of a new era for the nation under the leadership of the first president of the twentieth century.

Kennedy’s presidency was characterised by significant events, including the Cuban Missile Crisis, the civil rights movement and the space race. Tragically, his term was short when he was assassinated on 22 November 1963 in Dallas, Texas. Despite his short time in office, Kennedy’s presidency is remembered for his vision, idealism and lasting legacy, such as his speech in Berlin when he said “Ich bin ein Berliner”.
