Description
Emperor Charles of Austria in Berlin 1917.
The photo shows Emperor Karl Franz Josef, the last Emperor of Austria-Hungary, on an official visit to Berlin in 1917. The Emperor’s visit and the formal background show the close alliance between Austria-Hungary and the German Empire during the First World War.
Emperor Charles of Austria – better known as Charles I – was the last Emperor of Austria and King of Hungary. He ascended the throne in 1916 after the death of his great-uncle Franz Joseph I. During his short reign, he attempted to end the First World War through peace negotiations and implement reforms in the multi-ethnic state, but was unable to halt its decline. After the collapse of Austria-Hungary in November 1918, he went into exile.
