Munich is badly damaged in the summer of 1945.
The façade of the Munich National Theatre shows clear signs of war damage. Traces of bomb hits, splinters and large cracks criss-cross the once magnificent outer wall. Debris is scattered around and the roof has partially collapsed. Silence now reigns where once the sounds of opera could be heard. One person walking in front of the ruin to be seen – the traces of destruction, a silent witness to the war. While the city takes the first steps to remove the rubble, the National Theatre stands both as a ruin and as a promise: a reminder of what was lost and a testimony to what will rise again.
