Ruins of Munich Central Station – May 1945
Munich Central Station lies in ruins in May 1945. Where trains full of travellers once arrived and departed, the scene is now one of destruction. The impressive hall roof has largely collapsed, bent steel girders protrude into the sky like skeletons.
Despite the destruction, the site remains significant: the railway station was and is the heart of the city, a hub that connects people. Now it stands as a symbol of the deep cut of the war – but also of the imminent reconstruction.
