In June 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy traveled through the Federal Republic of Germany. Along the route of travel, cheering crowds lined the streets. The photograph shows a scene from the motorcade in which Kennedy was enthusiastically received by the population. The visit took place against the backdrop of the Cold War and the construction of the wall erected in 1961.
