From June 23 to 26, 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy visited the Federal Republic of Germany. The photograph shows Kennedy together with Chancellor Konrad Adenauer in an open vehicle during a motorcade. Such vehicle convoys through busy streets were among the central elements of the visit and drew jubilant crowds in many places. The visit took place under the sign of the Cold War and German-American alliance loyalty.
