In June 1963, U.S. President John F. Kennedy visited the Federal Republic of Germany and West Berlin. The photograph shows Kennedy at a lectern, surrounded by military and civilian officials. The visit took place during the Cold War and served to reaffirm American support for West Germany and West Berlin, two years after the construction of the Berlin Wall.
