During U.S. President John F. Kennedy’s visit to Germany in June 1963, hundreds of thousands of spectators lined the streets. The photograph shows young people who had secured an elevated vantage point on the ledge of a historic building. The spontaneous enthusiasm of the population—among young people as well—was a defining characteristic of the entire journey through the Federal Republic and West Berlin.
