During US President John F. Kennedy’s visit to Germany in June 1963, hundreds of thousands of people gathered in the streets at the various stops along the route. The population received Kennedy with extraordinary enthusiasm; banners and American flags characterized the scene. The visit took place against the backdrop of the Cold War and the Berlin Wall, erected two years earlier, and was regarded as a strong symbol of German-American solidarity.
