The photograph, taken from an elevated perspective, shows a broad street nearly completely filled by a densely packed crowd. Numerous demonstrators hold signs aloft; the individual texts are not legible from this distance, but correspond to the uniform appearance of the march banners distributed by the organizing committee. In the lower portion of the image, scattered vehicles can be seen accompanying the procession. The photograph documents the collective character of the March on Washington, in which hundreds of thousands of people, Black and White, advocated for civil rights and jobs. The scene illustrates nonviolent mass protest as a central tactic of the U.S. civil rights movement in 1963.
