Historical background

In May 1945, Munich, like many other cities in Germany, was badly destroyed in the final phase of the Second World War. The city was heavily bombed by the Allies, resulting in significant damage to the city’s infrastructure and architectural heritage.

The bombing campaign targeted various strategic locations in Munich, including industrial areas, transport hubs and military installations. The aim was to weaken the German war effort and bring about the collapse of the Nazi regime. However, the bombing also led to the destruction of residential areas and historical sights.

One of the most devastating attacks on Munich took place on 25 April 1944 and is known as the ‘Great Munich Air Raid’. During this raid, the Royal Air Force (RAF) dropped a large number of high-explosive and incendiary bombs on the city, causing widespread destruction. The old town centre, including the historic Marienplatz and the Frauenkirche, was badly damaged.
