The photograph shows the front façade of the Schiller Theatre in Berlin-Charlottenburg in broad daylight, clearly recognizable by its characteristic semicircular glass foyer and the inscription “Schiller Theater” set into the façade. The building opened in 1951 as a reconstruction of the war-damaged predecessor structure and embodied West Berlin’s cultural renewal in the postwar period. In the foreground, a passenger car from the early 1950s passes along the wide, quiet street — an incidental sign of the emerging economic miracle (Wirtschaftswunder). During this time, the Schiller Theatre served as one of West Berlin’s most prestigious dramatic theaters and stood symbolically for the city’s cultural aspirations as the “showcase of the West” amid the Cold War.
