The elaborate neon advertising bathes the building façade in bright light and exemplifies the flourishing entertainment and consumer culture in mid-1950s West Berlin. The presence of a major American studio film in a modern widescreen presentation points to West Berlin’s close cultural ties with the West and its role as the “showcase of the West” amid the Cold War. The adjacent Konzert Café visible in the background of the photograph underscores the diverse urban nightlife that unfolded in the western part of the divided city despite—or indeed because of—the political tensions.
