The nighttime photograph shows the Kurfürstendamm area in the western part of Berlin, flooded with neon advertising and neon lettering. The Bosch sign dominates, rising into the black sky with the slogan “Im Auto – Gute Fahrt” and a glowing spark plug graphic — a symbol of emerging motorization and the economic miracle (Wirtschaftswunder). Alongside it, Scharladhberg Meisterbrand, a hotel am Zoo, and further gastronomy and retail businesses compete for the attention of passersby. The dense juxtaposition of commercial neon advertising demonstrates the contrast to the destroyed and dark eastern part of the city: West Berlin consciously presented itself as the “showcase of the West,” whose nighttime gleam embodied prosperity and consumer freedom. The scene attests to how rapidly the western part of the city had reinvented itself as an urban consumer center by 1955.
