A US soldier stands in uniform in front of US forces headquarters in Berlin, identifiable by the clearly legible shoulder insignia “BERLIN” and the unit emblem on the M1 steel helmet. In the background, a multi-story administrative building with flagpoles is visible, which can be attributed to the Berlin Area Command. The photograph documents the permanent Allied occupation presence in the western part of the divided city: a decade after the end of the war, the United States maintained an independent garrison in Berlin with its own command structure. The soldier embodies the Western powers’ claim to secure Berlin as part of the free world—a central symbol in the Cold War, in which the city was regarded as an exposed Western outpost in the midst of the Soviet occupation zone.
