The photograph shows a generously planned residential settlement for US military personnel and their families in Berlin-Dahlem, on Hüttenweg. The street sign “Steward Str.” points to the English-language naming of streets within the American settlement area. The four-story residential blocks, set within a pine forest with winding paths, were constructed in the mid-1950s and reflect the determination of the US occupying power to provide its members with a Western-modern standard of living in the heart of the divided city. Two children in the foreground and an American vehicle of the era underscore the everyday and family character of this enclosed community. The settlement exemplifies the permanent Allied presence in West Berlin and the spatial separation between the US military community and the German urban population in the context of the Cold War.
