The image shows the U.S. Army Shopping Center on Hüttenweg in the American sector of Berlin, photographed in summer 1955. The low brick building, overgrown with ivy, bears a clearly legible sign reading “U.S. Army Shopping Center”; in the foreground, a military truck and several automobiles from the early postwar period pass along the street. The building, situated within an expansive, park-like complex with mature trees, was part of the infrastructure of the U.S. garrison in West Berlin. Such facilities supplied American military personnel and their families with goods from the United States, thereby creating a largely self-contained world within the divided city. The Shopping Center exemplifies the enduring Allied presence in the western part of Berlin and daily life during the Cold War, in which American consumer standards were visibly inscribed into the Berlin cityscape.
