The still shows the main façade of the Henry Ford Building of the Free University of Berlin, completed in 1954 as the central lecture hall and administrative building of the newly established West Berlin campus. The building, in the functional style of postwar modernism, presents itself with a light rendered façade, generous ribbon windows, and a glazed ground floor with a revolving door entrance. The well-maintained lawn and park-like tree stock underscore the representative character of the complex. The Free University had been founded in 1948 as a democratic counterinstitution to the Humboldt University under Soviet control and symbolized, in the context of the Cold War, West Berlin’s self-assertion as an education and cultural center. The new building, co-financed by the Ford Foundation, embodied both the Western reconstruction program and West Berlin’s close ties with the USA in the early postwar period.
