The photograph shows the building of Berliner Bank on Hardenbergstraße in the West Berlin district of Charlottenburg, taken in summer 1955. The modern, multi-story reinforced concrete grid structure with expansive window façade and the widely visible “BERLINER BANK” lettering on the roof exemplifies the architectural renewal that accompanied the West German economic miracle (Wirtschaftswunder). To the right at the edge of the frame, another new building of the same era is visible; young street trees and parked vehicles from the early 1950s complete the picture of a rapidly regenerating city center. As an institution of West Berlin’s financial sector, Berliner Bank simultaneously symbolizes the economic independence and stabilization of the western sector amid the divided city. The image is part of the documentary film record of the emerging economic miracle, deliberately presenting West Berlin as a capable “showcase of the West” in contrast to the Soviet-controlled eastern part of the city.
