Description
Berlin 1963
Historical background
In 1963, Berlin was a focal point of the Cold War, symbolised by the Berlin Wall, which had divided the city since its construction in 1961. The Wall was a visible sign of the tensions between the West and the Eastern Bloc.
On 26 June 1963, US President John F. Kennedy visited Berlin and gave a memorable speech in front of Schöneberg City Hall in which he expressed his solidarity with the people of West Berlin. In his famous speech, Kennedy uttered the words “Ich bin ein Berliner”, emphasising the United States’ support for freedom and resistance to the communist threat.
Kennedy’s visit and his moving speech strengthened the moral support of West Berliners. His words became a symbol of solidarity and cohesion in a time of political uncertainty and conflict.
