A once magnificent gable rises into the sky, its masonry frayed, window cavities empty. Only fragments of the once ornate decorations can still be recognised, while the rest lies in ruins on the ground.
Dust and rubble cover the street below, where the occasional person moves through the ruins. The surrounding buildings are badly damaged, some of them just facades with no interior life. The silence of the destroyed old town is broken only by distant rooms and quiet footsteps – Munich in May 1945, a city in ruins.
