It was introduced in 1942 and was originally designed for maritime patrol and long-range transport missions. The Ju 290 had a spacious cargo hold, a range of over 6,000 kilometres and was equipped with defensive armament including machine guns and cannons. Some variants were used for reconnaissance and electronic intelligence gathering. Despite its advanced capabilities, only a few were produced and it remained a relatively rare aircraft in the Luftwaffe fleet.
