In 1937, the Leica camera factory in Wetzlar was an important manufacturer of high-quality cameras and optical devices. The Leitz company was founded in 1869 by Ernst Leitz in Wetzlar, Germany. The Leica cameras, in particular the legendary Leica I, had already revolutionised the photography industry in the 1920s by offering compact, easy-to-use cameras with outstanding image quality and precision.

In 1932, Leitz introduced the Leica II, followed by the Leica III in 1933, which proved popular with professional photographers and enthusiasts alike and helped to increase the popularity of 35mm cameras worldwide.
