In May 1945, Munich, like many other cities in Germany, was heavily destroyed in the final phase of the Second World War. The city was heavily bombed by the Allied forces, causing considerable damage to its infrastructure and architectural heritage.
The bombing campaign targeted various strategic locations in Munich, including industrial areas, transport hubs and military installations. The aim was to weaken the German war effort and bring about the collapse of the Nazi regime. However, these bombings also led to the destruction of residential areas and historical landmarks.
One of the most devastating attacks on Munich took place on 25 April 1944 and is known as the “Great Munich Air Raid”. During this raid, the Royal Air Force (RAF) dropped a large number of high-explosive and incendiary bombs on the city, causing widespread destruction. The old town centre, including the historic Marienplatz and the Frauenkirche, was badly damaged.
