The city was badly damaged, many buildings lay in ruins, the infrastructure was destroyed and the streets were full of rubble. Important landmarks such as the Reichstag, the Brandenburg Gate and many residential areas were badly damaged. The human toll was immense, there were many civilian casualties and many people were displaced. The devastation marked the end of National Socialist Germany and the beginning of post-war reconstruction.
