Space Race 1963

Historical background

In 1963, the United States and the Soviet Union continued their battle for supremacy in space. With the launch of Valentina Tereshkova, the first woman in space on board Vostok 6, the Soviet Union achieved another triumph. The so called Space Race saw the Soviets ahead again.
The United States intensified its efforts to catch up with its Cold War rival. NASA launched several missions, including the Mercury-Atlas 9 mission, which took astronaut Gordon Cooper on a one-day journey around the Earth.
