Description

Historical context

The film documents the 1962 Soviet Aviation Day in Tushino and shows aerobatics, formation flying and heavy bomber demonstrations. MiG-19 “Farmer” fighter jets perform snap rolls and group manoeuvres, interspersed with footage of a MiG-15 “Midget” trainer in flight. Sukhoi “Fitters” carry out a bomb drop, while E-66 “Fishbeds” demonstrate aerobatics and JATO launches. Large formations consist of Tu-20 “Bear” bombers armed with stand-off missiles, Tu-16 “Badgers”, Tupolev “Blinders”, Beriev M-10 “Mallow” flying boats, Sukhoi “Fishpots”, Yak-25 “Firebars”, a Myasishchev “Bounder” and a Yakovlev “Fiddler”. Prime Minister Nikita Khrushchev and cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin watch the proceedings from the grandstand, which is topped with a banner reading “Glory to Soviet Aviation”. #190565
