Foundation of NATO in 1949

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) was founded on April 4, 1949. It was established as a military alliance between Western democracies, including the United States, Canada, and several European countries, in response to the threat posed by the Soviet Union and the rise of communism in Europe after World War II. NATO was created as a collective defense system to ensure the security and stability of the region and to contain the influence of the Soviet Union.
