Historical context
In 1919, while still in office as Assistant Secretary of the Navy, Franklin Delano Roosevelt – known as FD Roosevelt for short – visited the Reich Chancellery in Berlin. His visit symbolised the USA’s efforts to establish diplomatic contacts with the young Weimar Republic and realign transatlantic relations despite the harsh Versailles Treaty and the tense post-war situation.
This gesture was part of a broader attempt to establish a stable and constructive dialogue with the German state at a time of upheaval and political realignment in Europe.
