After the fire that destroyed the airship LZ 129 Hindenburg on May 6, 1937, in Lakehurst, New Jersey, within minutes, the exposed aluminum framework remained as wreckage on the ground. The photograph shows the phase of debris inspection, during which investigators and emergency personnel surveyed the site. Of the 97 people on board, 61 survived; 36 perished. The Hindenburg disaster marked the end of commercial passenger airship service.
