At Karlsplatz, the ruins of destroyed buildings tower into the sky, their facades marked by bomb fragments, window cavities empty and burnt out. Debris is scattered across the streets, but initial clearing work has opened paths.
The once bustling square seems deserted, only occasionally do people move cautiously through the scene, searching for something usable or a new beginning. Among the remnants of the old city stands the Karlstor – damaged but still intact – as a silent witness to the war and a symbol for reconstruction.
