The Palace of Justice at Karlsplatz stands in May 1945 as a heavily damaged ruin. The impressive domed roof is burned out, parts of the facade are marked by impacts, window openings gape empty. The magnificent architecture of the building is barely recognizable, charred debris and heaps of rubble lie in front of the entrance.
Despite the destruction, the monumental columns still stand, silent witnesses of the past. Karlsplatz, once a bustling traffic hub, appears deserted – the traces of the war define the scene. Yet even in this ruin lies the hope of rebuilding a city that will rise anew from the rubble.
