Queue in front of the Rischart bakery, Marienplatz – Munich, May 1945
A long queue of hungry people has formed in front of the Rischart bakery on Marienplatz. Women with empty shopping bags, old men with worn coats and children with pale faces wait patiently. Their faces are marked by deprivation, but there is hope in their eyes – bread means survival.
Under the control of US troops, the city is trying to make the arduous transition to a peaceful everyday life. Despite the rubble and hardship, the scene is a symbol of a new beginning: the bakery ovens are burning again, flour is scarce but available – and people are waiting because they know there will be bread again. A small piece of normality returns to Munich.
