The Theatine Church, once a baroque landmark of Munich, lies heavily damaged on Odeonsplatz in May 1945. Its striking twin towers still tower into the sky, but the roof has partly collapsed and the ornate façade is scarred by bomb splinters. Large parts of the interior of the church have been destroyed, valuable frescoes and stucco decorations irretrievably lost.
Rubble lies in front of the portal, window panes are missing and light penetrates through gaping holes into the devastated nave. But despite the severe damage, the church still stands – a symbol of resilience and hope for a new beginning in the midst of a destroyed city.
