Description

US soldiers in front of the ruins of the Brown House in Munich May 1945

Ruins of the Brown House, Briennerstraße – Munich, May 1945
The former headquarters of the National Socialist German Labour Party, the Brown House in Briennerstraße, lies in ruins in May 1945. The massive building structure is badly damaged – parts of the façade have collapsed, large sections of the roof are missing and charred beams protrude from the piles of rubble. Only fragments of the striking architecture remain as a reminder of the building that once served as the centre of power for the Nazi regime.
The ruins of the Brown House are more than just a destroyed building – they symbolise the end of a dictatorship and the beginning of a new chapter for Munich and Germany.
