Historical Background
On 2 May 1945, Soviet Red Army soldiers actually occupied the Reichstag in Berlin during the Battle of Berlin towards the end of the Second World War. The capture of the Reichstag was a significant milestone on the way to the Red Army’s conquest of Berlin and effectively marked the end of Nazi Germany. The famous photograph by Yuri Dmitrievich Shcherbakov, which shows Red Army soldiers with the Soviet flag on the Reichstag, has become a symbol of the Allied victory over Nazi Germany.
