Otto von Bismarck, an important Prussian statesman of the 19th century, is best known for his role in the unification of Germany and his influence on European politics. Bismarck led a series of wars that united the German states under Prussian leadership. The war against France in 1970 led to the proclamation of the German Empire in Versailles in 1871. From 1871 to 1890, he was the first Chancellor of the German Empire.
The Neue Wache was built between 1816 and 1818 according to designs by architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel. It originally served as a guardhouse for the Prussian Royal Guard.
