This photograph was taken during the preparation phase of the Allied invasion in spring 1944 on the south English coast. Wharton Becker was among the accredited U.S. war correspondents who accompanied the invasion preparations — together with other journalists such as Ernie Pyle, Jack Thompson, and Larry LeSueur, whom Jack Lieb also documented in this section of his film. The visible ‘War Correspondent’ badge identifies the civilian accreditation status that enabled journalists access to military units and operations.
