Mont-Saint-Michel, the fortified rocky island in Normandy since the Middle Ages, was part of the interior territory that Allied troops traversed after breaking out from the invasion zone. Jack Lieb filmed here in the summer of 1944 – between the advance from the Normandy hinterland and the liberation of Paris – one of France’s most famous historical sites in unusual color quality. The footage shows the brief stay of American soldiers at a location that remained largely undestroyed by the war.
