Mont-Saint-Michel was evacuated by German forces without combat in the summer of 1944 and was among the early liberated locations in Normandy. Jack Lieb captured the visit of American soldiers to the medieval abbey town in color—one of the rare color documents from this phase of the Western campaign. The densely hung tricolors demonstrate the population’s enthusiasm over liberation. The photograph is part of the film’s section documenting the Normandy hinterland following the fighting around Cherbourg.
