The photograph shows Ernest Hemingway in summer 1944 at Mont-Saint-Michel, taken during Jack Lieb’s advance through the Normandy hinterland. Hemingway was accredited at that time as a war correspondent for Collier’s Weekly with the Allied advance in France. Mont-Saint-Michel, which had been evacuated by German troops without significant combat, served during those weeks as a temporary transit point for correspondents and military personnel. Lieb’s private 16-mm Kodachrome camera provides here one of the rare color photographs of Hemingway from World War II.
