Jack Lieb encountered Ernest Hemingway in the summer of 1944 during the advance through the Normandy hinterland, near Mont-Saint-Michel. Hemingway was accredited at that time as a war correspondent for Collier’s Weekly and accompanied Allied units in northern France. Lieb’s 16-mm Kodachrome footage is among the rare color documents showing Hemingway in military service. The scene fits into the section of the film that covers the Normandy hinterland and daily life behind the front between the fall of Cherbourg and the liberation of Paris.
