On 19 August 1944, uprising and liberation fighting began in Paris even before Allied forces had fully reached the city. The obelisk on the Place de la Concorde forms the vanishing point of this photograph, which shows Allied vehicles in the midst of an aroused civilian population. The formal liberation of Paris followed on 25 August 1944, when the 2nd French Armored Division and the 4th U.S. Infantry Division entered the city. Jack Lieb’s Kodachrome photographs are among the few color documents of these events.
