In August 1944, Allied forces, including US units, entered the French capital as part of the liberation of Paris. After four years of German occupation, the Parisian population greeted the soldiers with spontaneous demonstrations in the streets of the city. Jack Lieb captured this scene in color – a medium through which these events were otherwise rarely documented. The liberation of Paris at the end of August 1944 marked a turning point of symbolic and strategic significance in the Allies’ Western campaign following the Normandy landing.
