On August 19, 1944, the Paris uprising of the Résistance against German occupation began; on this day Charles de Gaulle, leader of the Forces Françaises Libres, arrived in the city. His presence underscored the claim of the provisional French government to the restoration of state sovereignty. The formal liberation of Paris followed a few days later, on August 25, 1944, with the entry of the 2nd French Armored Division. Jack Lieb’s color footage belongs to the Paris episode of his film and shows de Gaulle at a historical moment that is otherwise documented almost exclusively in black and white.
