On August 19, 1944, Charles de Gaulle arrived in Paris as fighting for the city’s liberation was still ongoing. As leader of the Free French Forces, his presence embodied the claim to the restoration of French sovereignty. The scene is part of the Paris sequence in Jack Lieb’s color film “D-Day to Germany” and documents one of the symbolically most significant moments of Western European warfare in the summer of 1944. Lieb’s 16-mm Kodachrome footage ranks among the rare color documentation of this event.
