On August 19, 1944, the French Résistance began an armed uprising against German occupation in Paris – the prelude to the liberation of the city, which lasted until August 25. Jack Lieb documented this phase with his 16-mm Kodachrome camera in color while Allied troops and the Free French forces under General Leclerc advanced on Paris. Despite Hitler’s order for the destruction of the city, German city commander General Dietrich von Choltitz capitulated and saved Paris from extensive destruction.
