Description

Feldherrnhalle Munich May 1945-2; Photo; Licensed article; Original: 5740×4315; Photographer: Unknown; Licensable; Rights: © Bleek/zb Media. Ruins of the Feldherrnhalle, Munich – May 1945
The Feldherrnhalle on Odeonsplatz was badly damaged in May 1945, but still stands as a striking structure in the destroyed city. Its columns are battered, bullet holes and bomb splinters have scarred the façade and parts of the roof have collapsed.
The lion sculptures on the staircase are surrounded by rubble, but they still stand – silent witnesses to the past. The ruins of the Residence loom in the background, while the square in front of the Feldherrnhalle appears deserted and silent. Once a venue for National Socialist productions, it now symbolises the end of a chapter in Munich’s history.
